How to find the right size for your bed linen

A bed linen set usually always consists of a pillow cover and a duvet cover, which are available in different sizes. There are up to eight different pillow sizes available in our range. These are ideal as decorative pillows to complement your hotel bed linen.

No matter what size you choose: The most important thing is that you buy bed linen in the right size for your bedding. That's why you should always keep your bedding size in mind when looking for the perfect bed linen. Here you will find an overview of the most common sizes in German-speaking countries.

Bed linen sizes Germany

The standard size for duvet covers in Germany is 135x200 cm. If you prefer a larger comforter, you can also choose the 155x220 cm size in addition to the standard size. Oversized duvets are now becoming increasingly popular. These are particularly suitable for double beds: With a size of 220x240 cm, you can make yourself comfortable in your double bed!

Our tip

To be on the safe side, it is best to measure your bedding again before buying new bed linen!

The right fastener for your bed linen

In addition to different sizes, there are also many different fastening options for bed linen. It is particularly important that the bed linen fits well in the bedding and has sufficient support. After all, your bed linen serves as protection for your pillow and duvet.

In the hotel industry, there are two other very important factors: It is important for housekeeping to cover the hotel beds quickly and easily. In addition, many hotels give their bed linen to a laundry for cleaning, where the bed linen is usually also ironed. These aspects must be taken into account when choosing the type of closure.

The hotel closure

This type of closure saves a lot of time thanks to its quick and easy handling. Covers with a hotel closure have a flap on the open side to hold the bedding in place. This prevents the bed linen from slipping out.

  • Standard closure in the hotel industry
  • Fold in 30 cm (duvet cover) or 20 cm (pillow cover)
  • Saves time due to quick covering

The hotel closure with bow dart

In addition to the conventional hotel closure, there is also the hotel closure with an additional bow dart. Here, the closure is provided with an additional seam on the left and right to fix the filling even better.

  • Further development of the hotel closure
  • 30 cm (duvet cover) or 20 cm (pillow cover) folded in, additionally fixed with curved seam
  • Beds can be made up quickly
  • Fastening of the filling with two side seams

The zipper

This type of closure is particularly popular in the home! It closes very quickly and the bedding stays in place without slipping out.

  • Flawless zipper
  • Very good fixation of the filling
  • Low weight: cost savings in the laundry

The button fastener

The button fastener is the classic fastener. The buttons are sewn into the open ends and can be fastened there. They are usually hidden. The advantage of the button closure is that the bedding is much better enclosed in the cover. However, changing the bed linen usually takes considerably longer. Over the years, the button closure has increasingly given way to the zipper.

  • Traditional fastening for a classic look
  • Fully resistant buttons

The bag closure

The bag closure is very similar to the hotel closure. A narrowing at the top of the opening ensures that the filling is held in place. Bed linen with a bag closure is easy to iron and saves time when making the beds. Simply fold the narrowing at the top of the bag closure inwards after making up the bed.

  • Beds can be covered quickly
  • Fixation of the filling by narrowing at the upper end
  • Easy to iron, no pre-ironing necessary

The laundry fastener

As the name suggests, this closure is particularly popular when the bed linen is cleaned in the laundry. This type of duvet cover is up to 10 cm longer in order to best enclose the bedding. On the open closure side, there are holding seams on the left and right approx. 7 cm from the edge. As well as being easy to use in the laundry, this duvet cover guarantees quick and easy bedding.

  • 10 cm longer duvet cover, 2 holding points/seams 7 cm from the edge
  • Very quick bed making
  • Very easy to mangle
  • Reduced weight saves costs in the laundry

These materials are suitable for bed linen

Cotton

Cotton is probably the most commonly used raw material for bed linen. Depending on which cotton quality is used, the price range can be quite wide. The selection ranges from coarser linon fabric made from short cotton fibers to fine satin made from high-quality cotton. Cotton bed linen is therefore available in every price segment. Cotton is characterized by the fact that it is breathable and absorbent. High-quality cotton consists of long and durable fibers. The natural fiber feels pleasantly soft and natural on the skin.

Polyester

In addition to cotton, polyester yarns are also frequently found in bed linen. Polyester is a synthetically produced fiber. The use of polyester in bed linen production has several advantages: polyester dries faster than cotton. This saves energy and reduces the amount of care required for bed linen. In addition, compared to cotton, polyester retains its shape and does not warp. To compensate for the lower breathability and absorbency of polyester, it is usually woven with cotton. This combines the advantages of both materials.

Linen

There is another material that has become increasingly popular in recent years: Linen! Linen is obtained from the stems of flax plants and provides a cooling sensation on the skin. Linen is also particularly absorbent and has a temperature-regulating effect - these properties ensure a pleasant sleeping climate. Linen also creates a natural look. The crushed look is desirable here: linen bed linen does not need ironing!

Excursus: What is the Thread Count?

Thread Count (TC) means "thread density". It is a unit of measurement for textiles. The TC indicates how many threads are woven into one inch (2.54 cm²). To determine the exact thread density, all horizontal and vertical threads are counted. These threads are called weft and warp threads.

Generally speaking, the higher the thread density, the finer the yarn and the denser the yarns are woven together. Coarser yarns are usually used for fabrics with a low thread to keep the fabric dense and the shrinkage low. These are obtained from the cheaper, short-staple cotton. The fabric made from these yarns is not as fine and feels somewhat rougher and more robust.

Premium bed linen starts at around 200 TC, always assuming that high-quality yarns are used. If you are looking for cheaper bed linen qualities, you will find entry-level models with up to 80 TC on the market.

Very high-quality bed linen starts at a thread density of around 200 TC. This is often the case with fine damask and satin bed linen.

We do not use a higher TC for bed linen, as the fabric would otherwise become too dense and important functions such as breathability would suffer. Even if you keep reading information about 600TC or higher on the internet: Don't be fooled by this! In most cases, twisted yarns (two threads woven together) are used, which are counted twice.

The thread count is therefore an auxiliary term that better describes the quality of the bed linen. We have therefore decided to include this figure in the explanation of the different bed linen qualities.

What bed linen qualities are there?

Now that you have an overview of the materials used, we would like to discuss the different qualities. These have an influence on the characteristics and function of the different bed linen. After all, bed linen should not only be beautiful, but also meet the requirements of your sleeping comfort!

Damst-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Damask bed linen

Damask bed linen is characterized by an alternating shiny and matt pattern, which appears in reverse order on the reverse side. Depending on the perspective from which the fabric is viewed, it has an elegant, shiny effect. Damask is particularly popular for single-colored fabrics with its elegant appearance. Particularly high-quality, fine yarns are used for damask. By using these yarns, it is technically possible to weave a large number of them tightly together. This results in an outstanding quality that impresses with its extraordinary durability (200-300 TC).

  • Finest yarns (long fiber cotton)
  • Elegant and luxurious pattern thanks to state-of-the-art weaving technology
  • High durability

Satin-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Satin bed linen

Satin bed linen is made from the finest yarns and is characterized by its special weave. The so-called satin weave ensures a natural sheen. The shimmering satin bed linen imitates the properties of silk. The skin-flattering, soft fabric, which is also breathable, gives every bedroom a very special atmosphere. As with damask, many threads are tightly woven together in a satin weave. The high use of material (200-300 TC) in combination with the finest yarns gives the fabric an unmistakably soft feel. Satin and damask are among the highest quality bed linen qualities.

  • Unmistakably soft fabric
  • Finest yarn quality (long-fiber cotton)
  • Silky sheen (mercerized)

Perkal-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Percale bed linen

Percale is a fine-threaded, strong cotton fabric (up to 200 TC) made from a plain weave. Percale originally comes from Persia and is very skin-friendly. The breathable and cooling properties of percale bed linen ensure a pleasant sleeping experience. Percale bed linen is very hard-wearing and will last a long time.

  • Hard-wearing
  • Cooling due to light plain weave
  • Fine yarns

Renforcé-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Renforcé bed linen

The soft Renforcé fabric not only flatters your skin, but is also temperature-regulating and particularly comfortable. It consists of a solid basic quality (up to 140 TC). Medium-fine threads are used for Renforcé bed linen. The standard plain weave fabric is easy to care for and hard-wearing. This makes Renforcé bed linen a classic in the bedroom all year round.

  • Pleasant to the touch
  • Medium-fine to short-fiber yarns
  • Easy to care for

Linon-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Linon bed linen

Linon is a smooth, plain weave fabric (80 and 150 TC). Linon bed linen is usually made from inexpensive and coarser cotton yarns and is considered an inexpensive alternative in the bed linen segment. This material is suitable for use all year round and is easy to care for.

  • Short-fiber yarns
  • Entry-level class at great prices

Seesucker-Bettwaesche-Stoff

Seersucker bed linen

Seersucker is an easy-care crepe fabric that has a three-dimensional crease effect. The fabric is comfortable against the skin when sleeping and has a temperature-regulating effect. The crepe fabric creates small air chambers and spaces between the body and the bed linen, which counteract sweating, especially in summer. Seersucker bed linen is non-iron and therefore not only saves costs, but above all time.

  • Cooling effect due to special weaving technique
  • Non-iron

Jersey-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Jersey bed linen

Unlike other types of bed linen, jersey bed linen is knitted rather than woven. As a result, the fabric is slightly elastic and does not need to be ironed. There are two different qualities: "single jersey", which is knitted once, and "interlock jersey", which is knitted twice. This process makes interlock jersey a very dense and durable fabric. Jersey bed linen flatters the skin and is extremely soft. It is also very easy to care for.

  • Elastic
  • Non-iron
  • Cuddly soft feel

Biber und Flanell-Bettwäsche-Stoff

Beaver and flannel bed linen

The terms beaver and flannel are often used interchangeably for bed linen. Both are soft, roughened cotton fabrics. Conventional beaver bed linen is only roughened on one side, while the fine beaver or flannel version is roughened on both sides and is therefore even fluffier. This bed linen is characterized above all by its warming effect and is therefore particularly suitable for cool temperatures. It is also easy to care for and very crease-resistant.

  • High degree of warmth
  • Soft and fluffy on the skin
  • Low ironing

Mischgewebe Polyester / Baumwolle Stoff

Polyester / cotton blended fabric

The combination of cotton and polyester combines the advantages of both materials: polyester dries faster than cotton. This saves energy and reduces the amount of care required for the bed linen. In addition, compared to cotton, polyester retains its shape and does not warp. To compensate for the lower breathability and absorbency of polyester, it is usually woven with cotton. This combines the advantages of both materials

Mischgewebe Leinen / Baumwolle-Stoff

Linen / cotton blend

Linen has become increasingly popular in recent years! Linen is obtained from the stems of flax plants and provides a cooling feeling on the skin. Linen is also particularly absorbent and has a temperature-regulating effect - these properties ensure a pleasant sleeping climate. Linen also creates a natural look. The crushed look is desirable here: linen bed linen does not need ironing! The linen fiber is somewhat more robust than cotton, which is why we weave the fiber together with cotton to create the necessary fluffiness for an all-round comfortable sleep.

Bed linen for every season

The temperature in the bedroom plays an important role in restful sleep. It is recommended to keep the temperature in the bedroom between 15°C and 18°C. As everyone has an individual perception of warmth, you can optimize your sleeping temperature with the right bed linen. Due to the different material properties, some qualities are more suitable in summer, others in winter.

First of all, there is no bed linen that is only suitable for one season! Everyone has their own preferences, depending on their personal sense of warmth. However, there are some models that are particularly suitable for certain temperatures. For warmer temperatures, we recommend fabrics with cooling and temperature-regulating properties. These are linen fabrics in particular, as well as seersucker and satin bed linen. When it gets colder, cotton fabrics with a brushed surface are particularly suitable. These keep you warm and ensure that you don't get too cold. The classics here are beaver and flannel bed linen.

Care instructions for your bed linen

While we sleep at night, it is natural that we sweat a little. We also shed body hair. This is not a problem as long as you wash your bed linen regularly. This is because the warm, damp climate in your bed is the perfect habitat for fungi, mites and bacteria, known as microbes. These microbes trigger allergies in many people. We therefore recommend that you wash your bed linen approximately every two weeks.

In addition to regular washing, it is important that you air your duvets and pillows every day. Fluff up your duvets and pillows and fluff them back. This allows the moisture created during the night to escape during the day.

Wash bed linen correctly

To ensure that all microorganisms are killed during washing, you should always wash your bed linen as indicated on the care label. A temperature of 60°C is generally sufficient for hygienically clean bed linen. Above this temperature, 99% of all bacteria are killed. It is not absolutely necessary to boil your laundry. Temperatures of around 95°C are very hard on textiles and reduce their lifespan over time. Nevertheless, many of our bed linen products can withstand these high temperatures: our professional-quality bed linen products are not only suitable for private use, but also for use in the hotel industry. To clean your bed linen as gently as possible, turn pillow covers and duvet covers inside out before washing and close all zippers, if present.

By the way: as bed linen can be washed at high temperatures, it always shrinks a little. We take this shrinkage into account during production. You should therefore always wash your bed linen at the temperature specified on the washing label for the first few washes. In this way, pillow covers and duvet covers will reach their actual size after a few washes.

You can treat white laundry with heavy-duty detergent. This detergent contains bleach and thus ensures a bright white. For colored laundry, you need a color detergent. Color detergent does not contain any bleaching agents and ensures that the colors stay bright for a long time. Fabric softener is not necessary and can even damage your textiles. Fabric softeners contain fats to achieve a soft feel. These fats are deposited on the textiles and can therefore impair the absorbency of duvet covers and pillow covers.

Our tip

To treat your laundry as sustainably and environmentally friendly as possible, you should use washing powder. Unlike liquid detergent and detergent pods, this is free from microplastics.

Do bed linen need to be ironed?

The following applies to both the washing machine and the dryer: Do not overfill the drum! This reduces the formation of creases during the washing process and makes ironing easier. If the bed linen does not need to be completely crease-free, it is sufficient to smooth out the pillow covers and duvet covers when it comes out of the dryer or from the washing line.

There is also bed linen that does not need to be ironed: seersucker, beaver and jersey are considered non-iron.
