What are the advantages of using paper plates?

Paper plates come in a wide variety of sizes and colors. Thanks to the huge selection, everyone can find the right paper plate for their desired use. The disposable product saves a lot of time when washing up as well as when disposing of leftovers, because the plates can be conveniently disposed of in the residual waste together with the leftover food. They also save space and are many times lighter than porcelain plates. Paper plates also don't break if they accidentally fall on the floor. And if a plate does get damaged, you can simply use another one - at this low price, it's definitely worth keeping a larger quantity in stock.

What are the types of paper plates?

Disposable paper plates can basically be distinguished by their coating. Uncoated paper plates are more environmentally friendly than the coated version, as they are made only from virgin fibers and recycled materials and - as the name suggests - are not coated. Therefore, they are perfect for pastries and cakes. However, when using greasy, hot or moist dishes, the coated paper plates are advantageous. The difference in production is that the coated products are covered with a thin layer of polyethylene. This is a very complex process and ensures that the surface of the paper plate becomes very smooth and slightly shiny. Most importantly, the additional coating serves to prevent the disposable paper plate from becoming soggy.

Did you know?

Coated as well as heavily soiled paper plates must not be disposed of in the paper waste. Instead, they must be thrown in the residual waste.

How environmentally friendly are paper plates really?

This topic has been raised very frequently lately. It is very important to keep in mind what kind of paper plates we are talking about. Uncoated paper plates made from virgin fibers are very environmentally friendly and can be completely decomposed even without industrial composting facilities. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the coated variety - they are no longer biodegradable due to their plastic coating, and thus are not a viable plastic alternative in terms of environmental friendliness. However, this is often made up for by their better stability and more flexible range of use.
