What are the different types of disposable plates?

Plates for take-away use can basically be differentiated in terms of their materials. Here, the selection always depends on the intended use.

  • Cardboard/Paper: The use of paper plates is particularly suitable when the number of guests is uncertain. Here, a larger quantity can be conveniently purchased, as the plates are very inexpensive and space-saving. Moreover, in addition to the coated paper plates, there is also an uncoated, environmentally friendly alternative.

  • Sugar cane: Disposable plates made of sugar cane are the natural alternative to plastic plates. Because they are made from bagasse, a renewable resource produced during sugar production, they can be easily composted.

  • Palm leaf: Disposable dinnerware pressed from palm leaves is also environmentally friendly and sustainable. Most importantly, palm leaf plates are waterproof and sturdy, allowing almost any food to be served on this plate. In addition, each product has an individual grain, making it truly unique.

  • Plastic: Plastic plates are efficient, hygienic and unbreakable. This makes them ideally qualified for events where glass is banned. However, from 2021, the ban on the sale of disposable plastic products, as they are harmful to the environment and cause a lot of waste.

  • Kraft paper: consists of a maximum of 20% recycled fibers, the secondary fibers, and at least 80% wood fibers, the primary fibers. The special feature here is that the production is more environmentally friendly than with other comparable materials. In addition, kraft paper plates convince with their strength and durability.

  • Wheat bran: Wheat bran is a by-product of flour production. More precisely, it is the waste product in the form of residues of the husk and germ. Plates made from wheat bran have the special property of being freezable and non-flammable.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using disposable plates?

In this question, it depends mainly on the material of the disposable plate. Paper plates, for example, are cheaper than plates made of palm leaf or sugar cane. Here it all depends on what you want to use the plates for. For pastries and cakes, you can use the paper plates without any problems. For greasy and hot food, a disposable plate made of sugar cane is more recommended. However, all disposable plates have one thing in common: you can eat flexibly and without being tied to a specific location, and you don't have to wash the plates after consumption.
