This makes the to go cutlery very hygienic - as there is no risk of bacteria being accidentally transferred from the previous person. As the take-away cutlery is only used once and then thrown away, you save a lot of valuable time washing up and less water is used. Disposable cutlery is easy to transport and does not take up much space. This is precisely why it is very popular with food trucks and food vans - because there is usually not much space to store things. Due to its dimensional stability and resistance to oils and fats, disposable cutlery is suitable for all types of food.

What disposable cutlery is available?

As with classic metal cutlery, disposable cutlery includes knives, forks and spoons as well as stirrers, long drink sticks and finger food tongs in various sizes, shapes and designs. However, the most important distinction here is the material. Many people are only familiar with disposable cutlery made of plastic or wood - and the plastic version will be banned throughout the EU from mid-2021. That's why there are now also takeaway cutlery made from bamboo or bioplastic, which have the advantage of being far more environmentally friendly than the plastic version.

These materials are suitable for disposable cutlery

  • Plastic: Plastic cutlery is first and foremost inexpensive, incredibly practical and hygienic. After all, there is hardly any other material that can be used in so many different ways. Disposable plastic cutlery can be used for everything, is robust, dimensionally stable and lightweight. But in addition to all the advantages, it has one major disadvantage: it is not at all environmentally friendly! And because of its long-term environmental impact, the European Parliament has voted by a large majority to ban the sale of single-use plastic products, which will come into force in mid-2021. It is therefore advisable to use the more environmentally friendly alternatives.

  • Wood:
    Sustainable, environmentally friendly and tasteless: this is how disposable wooden cutlery is often described. And rightly so! Wooden cutlery is usually made of birch wood. Birch wood is a natural and renewable raw material that is biodegradable, compostable and even incinerable. Wooden cutlery can also keep up with disposable plastic cutlery in terms of dimensional stability. The wooden version is often even more stable. Disposable wooden cutlery can be disposed of in the organic waste garbage can or compost.

  • Bioplastic:
    Disposable cutlery made from bioplastics is made from plant-based CPLA. This material is particularly heat-resistant and stable. It is described as environmentally friendly, as CPLA cutlery is completely biodegradable and contains no animal substances. The disposable product is temperature-resistant up to around 80°C, which means it can also be used for hot dishes. The special feature of organic plastic cutlery is that it has the same qualitative properties as normal plastic cutlery.

  • Bamboo:
    Bamboo is a rapidly renewable raw material that is often processed into disposable cutlery. The plant itself and therefore the end product are naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic. As well as being resistant to oil and grease, the cutlery is also compostable and biodegradable - the perfect alternative to plastic cutlery! The disposable bamboo cutlery can be disposed of in the organic waste garbage can or compost.
