Disposable bowls for the take-away business

Disposable bowls are a popular way of keeping food warm until you get home or to the office. The advantage over disposable plates is the complete thermal insulation of the food. While the use of take-away plates is more suitable for immediate consumption, food in a disposable tray can also be eaten warm at a later time. For this reason, take-away boxes are particularly suitable for out-of-home sales.

What types of disposable bowls are there?

The to go bowls can be made from a wide variety of materials such as polystyrene, styrofoam, polypropylene, aluminum, cardboard or bagasse.

Take Away Schalen
  • Polystyrene:
Polystyrene is a plastic made from petroleum and benzene. The main advantages of this material are its hardness and transparency. Thanks to their heat resistance, disposable polystyrene trays are the perfect choice for keeping food warm and safe during transportation. This is why it is one of the most popular packaging materials. The disposable bowls can be disposed of in the yellow bag or in the yellow garbage can.

  • Styrofoam:
Disposable polystyrene trays are made of foamed polystyrene, which is easy and inexpensive to process. They are very light and insulate both hot and cold food. They also withstand high pressure and prevent moisture transfer. The polystyrene trays should be disposed of in the yellow bag or yellow garbage can.

  • Aluminum:
Thanks to their temperature resistance from -40°C to 280°C, aluminum trays are very popular for out-of-home use. They can be used in ovens for baking and roasting as well as for reheating in the microwave. They can also be sealed relatively tightly. However, sauces and the like can leak out if they are tilted.

  • Polypropylene:
Take-away trays made of polypropylene are produced using plastics made from complex manufacturing processes, crude oil and various additives. Colloquially, we also refer to this material as plastic. Production is known to be very energy-intensive, but unlike conventional plastic, the end product is comparatively easy to recycle as it hardly develops any harmful substances in nature. This material should also be thrown into the yellow bag or the yellow garbage can.

  • Bagasse:
Bagasse is a by-product of sugar production and can be used to make disposable packaging such as take-away trays. Trays made from bagasse are robust, hard-wearing and, above all, very environmentally friendly. The sugar cane fibers from which the product is made are 100% biodegradable and also release important nutrients for the soil as they decompose. Unlike the disposable trays mentioned above, those made from bagasse can be disposed of in the organic waste garbage can or compost.

  • Cardboard:
The well-known disposable cardboard trays are produced by pressing cellulose and waste paper together. Thanks to their production from renewable raw materials, they are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Thanks to their food-safe and neutral taste, cardboard bowls are often used in the take-away sector. Uncoated disposable cardboard bowls can be disposed of in the paper garbage can, whereas the coated version belongs in the residual waste.

Did you already know?

An EU-wide ban on single-use plastic products came into force in mid-2021. This also affects take-away products made from single-use plastic or polystyrene. Disposable bowls made from these materials may then no longer be used. However, there are good environmentally friendly alternatives in the form of disposable bowls made of cardboard or bagasse.

What are the differences between the disposable bowls?

The bowls differ not only in their material, but also in their structure and coating. On the one hand, there are the classic disposable bowls without dividers, which are ideal for keeping a dish warm and safe. However, some to go trays have additional dividers. These separate the different foods in the tray from each other. This allows, for example, chips and currywurst with sauce to be separated so that the chips do not become soggy or soaked with sauce during transportation. This means that the consumer does not have to save on anything and at least has the same standard of food quality. A further distinction can be seen in the coating of the disposable trays. In addition to the “normal” disposable trays, there are also laminated take-away variants. These allow the use of deep-fried snacks and food fried in hot fat.
