How to find the perfect sunshade for your restaurant

So that your guests can enjoy their stay in your outdoor area on sunny days, you need one thing above all else in addition to summery treats and an appealing ambience: shade! The easiest way to do this is to use parasols. They are more flexible than awnings and sun sails and also enhance your outdoor area as a decorative element.

Which parasols are available?

Parasols are available in different designs. Generally speaking, there are two types: Stick umbrellas and cantilever umbrellas.

  • Stick umbrellas: These umbrellas are the classic parasols. The pole and the base or horeca sunshade stand or ground socket are located in the middle. The parasol can be easily opened using a sliding or crank mechanism.
  • Traffic light umbrellas: Traffic light umbrellas are constructed differently to stick umbrellas. The base is on the side and the parasol hangs freely. This means they offer plenty of space in the shade. Traffic light parasols can be easily opened with a crank. A particular advantage is that cantilever parasols can be tilted and adjusted to the position of the sun depending on the time of day. This makes the cantilever parasol perfect for the catering industry.

Square or round - which catering parasol is better?

As large areas usually need to be shaded in restaurants, square parasols are particularly practical. As large umbrellas, they offer a larger shaded area than round umbrellas and prevent unsightly gaps in the sun. Market umbrellas in the catering industry are a special variant. They can also have two bases and are rectangular or square. A typical feature of these parasols is their striped pattern.

What materials are suitable for a parasol in a restaurant?

The cloths of parasols are usually made of polyester. This material has many advantages: It is easy to care for, robust, water-repellent and has a higher lightfastness than cotton.

Our tip

When buying, pay attention to the weight of the sunshades. A fabric that is too thin will not last long. High-quality sun cloths have a grammage of at least 180 g/m².

Powder-coated aluminum is best suited for the frame. The material is corrosion-resistant and stable. So your parasols always have a secure hold.

Do parasols protect against UV radiation?

A parasol only provides reliable protection against UV radiation if a sun protection factor is specified. Parasols without a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) provide shade but allow UV rays to pass through. To ensure that your guests can sit outside without worrying, you should look for a UPF of at least 50 - here the UV radiation under the sunshade is a maximum of 2 %.

Which umbrella stands are suitable for catering umbrellas?

Large catering umbrellas naturally have a certain weight. To prevent them from falling over even on windy days, it is very important to attach them correctly. Basically, the heavier the parasol stand, the more securely the parasol will stand!

How to make your catering parasols windproof: When choosing the right parasol stand, you should make sure that the stand matches the size and weight specifications of your parasol. The diameter of the trunk is an important criterion when choosing an umbrella stand.

At LUSINI, you only get umbrella stands that guarantee the secure attachment of catering umbrellas. You can choose between umbrella stands made of granite, stands made of polymer concrete and umbrella stands weighted down with plates.

Plate umbrella stands are less flexible once they have been positioned. If the position of the umbrella is to be changed, the entire stand, including the fixing plates, must be dismantled. If you want to change the position of your umbrellas frequently, granite or polymer concrete umbrella stands are the better choice. Here, castors are installed on the underside so that the umbrella stand can be moved more easily.

What makes a professional parasol stand out?

Professional parasols for the hospitality industry are designed to be particularly robust so that they offer a long service life. This gives you a reliable solution for providing your guests with protection from the sun and cooling shade in outdoor areas.

How do I clean a parasol?

Parasols are very easy to care for and uncomplicated to clean. The sun canvas is generally dirt-repellent and can simply be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid. The same applies to the frame. For longer periods of bad weather and in winter, you should fold up the parasols and cover them with a suitable protective cover.

What parasol size do I need for my tables?

The size of your restaurant parasol depends on both the table size and the desired shaded area.

  • For classic dining tables for six people, your parasol should ideally be 4 meters wide. That way, nobody has to sit in the sun.

  • A table for four people can be shaded with a 3 x 3 meter catering parasol.

  • A 2-meter parasol is usually sufficient for a table for two.
